Happy Chopper

This Banksy print portrays a helicopter with a bow around its front. This implicitly accords vehicles of war the status of presents or gifts and thus acutely encapsulates the way in which warfare is conferred respect and hallowed as a heroic occupation in many countries. This would have been especially relevant in 2003, when this image first originated and America was engaged in a bitter war on “terror”. The bizarre conflation of a pink bow, with a heavy duty vehicle has the effect of seditiously questioning the status quo. The very absurdity of this juxtaposition highlights how strange it is to elevate machines to the station of beloved object.
