The picture is essentially a parody of the act of suicide as an ape holds up a banana to his head in a manner akin to the way a human being might hold a gun to his temple at the moment that he takes his own life. The fact that this object, unlike a gun, is powerless and cannot actually hurt the ape is testament to the fact that the animal kingdom is in many ways healthier and less violent than the human world.
